QUICK TIPS

Glazed Cabinet Finishes

Manufacturers at all price points said at the 2001 Kitchen and Bath Industry Show to expect to see antique and glazed finishes go from custom status to standard. They see no end to the trend of homeowners looking to add a sense of heritage to their kitchens. To get a distressed look, cabinetmakers might sand a painted door or even rub it with rocks. Glazing achieves an aged effect through somewhat gentler means. At Medallion Cabinetry, for example, a glaze material is sprayed over a base stain or paint and then wiped off by hand. The glaze settles in the cabinet door’s corners, edges, and open grain areas, defining its details and lending an overall patina.
