“We used multiple lighting elements in this kitchen. This was a brand new home and you don’t always have such an opportunity to bring in as much light as possible. We used high-hat recessed lighting throughout the sloped ceiling, two skylights, an arched-top window over the sink, and bar pendant lighting over the island. As you can see in the photo, the midmorning sunlight adds a nice effect to the space.
"Good overhead lighting is important so that you aren’t working in shadows. Good lighting also makes you feel comfortable. In the evening, if you’re tired and the space is poorly illuminated, it doesn’t help your state of mind. The wrought iron fixture over the island complements the overall casual, contemporary country look—if it was more of a traditional country, we would have used a brass fixture.”
