Advantages
Using a table as an island is a great way to create an original, unfitted kitchen that doesn’t look like all the rest. Because a table is portable, not built-in, it can be moved around the kitchen to be used as a work station, serving area or display surface depending on the situation. Adding casters makes the job that much easier.
If you’re just adding an island and not remodeling the entire kitchen, a table may be your best bet. If storage is a priority, choose a table with one or more drawers, as well as a shelf or two below.
Design Tip
Even in a new kitchen, don’t always think “new” for a table island. In a rustic, country or farmhouse kitchen, the right antique or salvaged table will complement the design theme. Whether buying new or used, look for a finish, molding and leg style appropriate to the kitchen’s look.
