A Beach House Kitchen with a View of the Pacific

“I didn’t want it to be kitschy,” Susan Broderick says of the virtual, Monterey Bay oceanside dream home she designed. With a stunning view of the Pacific from the kitchen and living room windows, it’s doubtful anyone would take their eyes off of the ocean long enough to critique the design, but that didn’t stop Broderick from creating serene rooms that transition easily to the incredible scenery outside.

Designed for hosting gatherings and to accommodate her and her husband, Broderick’s home features a kitchen that flows into the living room, and is just a few steps away from a patio that also overlooks the ocean.  Broderick’s favorite aspect of the kitchen is the island, which is designed so she could still enjoy the ocean scene while cooking.

The fantastic seascape is undoubtedly the star of this space, and Broderick’s design goal was to not detract from it. “I wanted to keep the kitchen and the house in neutral so what you’re really focusing on is the view,” said Broderick. “Everybody does blue and white, everybody does turquoise… I wanted [the home] to look elegant.”

The appliances used in the kitchen are from Jenn-Air’s White Floating Glass collection. Broderick chose complementary neutral materials such as a honed Calacatta Oro marble countertop and a backsplash in sandy shades of limestone and marble.

Broderick’s design was inspired by a friend’s home located on California's central coastline between Santa Cruz and Monterey. Her friend’s home serves as an occasional meeting place for members of Mercey Springs, a non-profit that Broderick and her friend are involved in. “[The inside of] her house is not at all like [my dream] house, so one of the things I did was show how I would build a house in that location,” says Broderick. After her friend sees this design, she might be asking Broderick for a remodeling favor in the near future.

Designer Susan Broderick

Kitchen Designer Susan Broderick After spending 26 years as a cardiac care registered nurse, Susan Broderick, CKD, CBD, CID, needed a change of pace from her intense line of work. So she completely shifted professions, and in 1999 became a certified kitchen, bath and interior designer. Her fondness for design came from watching her father, who worked as a kitchen and bath remodeler when she was younger.

Broderick has been part of two design -build teams that won regional Contractor of the Year (CotY) awards from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). She’s also the President-Elect of the Greater Sacramento chapter of NARI. In her spare time, Broderick serves as the treasurer for Mercey Springs, a nonprofit organization that helps small charities with promotions and funding. She and her husband enjoy hosting dinner parties and cooking regional American dishes and international cuisines such as Italian, Thai and Mexican.
