“This kitchen was part of a new construction in a rural
section of Rhode Island. It was designed to complement the
home’s traditional New England shingle-style tradition. One of
the ways we did that was to create two of the pieces as
furnishings to give it the feel of an old-style kitchen. The
sidepiece takes on the appearance of a freestanding hutch.
It’s solid cherry with matching veneers in a combination of
glass and solid doors and open shelving. The center island has
turned cherry legs and positive toe kick, like a furnished
piece."

without complexity; they’re placed over flat panel rail and
stile doors, which are less ornate than a raised panel would
be. Shingle style houses are characterized by large spaces and
a degree of simplicity. We kept quite a lot of open floor
space as a kitchen in an older home would have. It’s a very
uncluttered room and the running trim is not overly ornate. We
tried to uphold the old New England preference for simplicity
of design.”
