Considering covering your walls in an Old World-style mural? Make sure you don't forget about the "old" part. "In the late '80s and early '90s, freshly painted murals were what everyone wanted," says Karen Black-Sigler, CKD, of Karen Black's Kitchens By Design of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. "But now a rule of thumb is if it looks old, it's great. A wall mural isn't acceptable unless you go over it with a glaze and make it look like we just uncovered it. There's a popular sanded texture that has the pigment mixed into the texture. It gives you a stucco effect with no swirls—a smooth wall with small indentations that looks very old."
