Watch Your Windows

Don't overlook the impact that carefully chosen windows can make in your design. "We're seeing a lot more glass and windows with less upper cabinets," says Jeff Gilman of Gilman Fine Woodworking of Whitefish, Montana. "You used to have a small kitchen window over the sink and upper cabinets on both sides. Now we're seeing brighter rooms with kitchen windows that are 6 feet or 8 feet wide." Homeowners craving the Old World-look should consider wooden windows because they give a mass and heaviness.
